Lagos Port
The Federal Government
has ordered the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to enforce 48
hours clearance of
cargo at the nation’s seaports.
It said that 48 hours clearance of cargo was achievable if all agencies of
government tasked with the implementation complete checking and inspection of
items on time.
The Minister of Transport, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, made this disclosure at the Headquarters of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Lagos on Monday.
Amaechi revealed that he had spoken to the President on the issue.
The Managing Director of NPA, Hallam Habib Abdullahi, while briefing the minister on some of the achievements of the organization explained that in the last two years the present management had embarked on programmes designed to improve the efficiency of NPA’s operations.
He explained that the major determinant of a good efficient and user- friendly port is hinged on vessel turn-around time, cargo dwell time, security of ships at berth as well as safety of the channel.
In addition to these, he said the need for huge resources to rehabilitate and modernize port infrastructure in order to meet the demands of port users actually gave rise to the concession of the ports terminals.
“In this area, our efforts are anchored on the need to deliver an efficient port service in a safe, secure and customer -friendly environment in accordance with international practices,”Abdullahi said.
