Ex-Barca boss reveals how they settled for Suarez after a bid for their first choice another EPL star, failed

Barcelona signed Luis Suarez in the summer of 2014 and has since gone on to be a hit, scoring 54 goals in 72 games. However, he was not the first choice for the Catalan club their former sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta has revealed.

Former sporting director at the Nou Camp, Andoni Zubizarreta, revealed the European champions had actually wanted to sign Sergio Aguero from Manchester City, but failed in their attempt.

Barca then focused on bringing Suarez who was already unsettled at Liverpool and indeed the Premier League to the club, in a deal worth £75million..

“We had a few options. Our first choice was not Suarez — he knows this," said Zubizarreta.

“In the winter, we tried to sign Aguero. But it didn’t come off. In this situation, there was no doubt: Luis Suarez became our only objective.”
