It's official! Chelsea announce deal for 20-year-old American defender Matt Miazga

Chelsea have strengthened their defensive options by swooping for Matt Miazga who is regarded as one of the hottest young stars in US football.
The 20-year-old centre-back completed a £3.5million move from New York Red Bulls on Wednesday night but his move was only announced by the club on Saturday afternoon.

Up to 10 Premier League clubs reportedly scouted him, including all the big teams after being alerted to the 6ft 3in defender, who does not require a work permit as he holds a Polish passport.

US first team manager Jurgen Klinsmann is understood to be happy to accept his transfer to the top flight, providing he is given the opportunity to play - rather than sit on the bench.

Chelsea have had to give assurances that he will have a chance of a first-team breakthrough. He will not be shipped out on loan.
The 6ft 4in stopper was recently saluted as 'the best defender in the league'

He said recently: 'The English Premier League is a very intriguing proposition for me. There is a lot of passion involved; hopefully one day I will have the opportunity to play there.'
